and from the first i heard of it, which was 6 or 7 years ago, i was suspicious of the whole thing being a poser fest. i always wanted to know why folks i talked to about it, who were soooo into it, would use up so much of their time, energy and money to create a "desert utopia" while doing nothing here in (my hometown) oakland to make it a better place to live. i imagine psychologists have a diagnostic term for this condition by now. since i'm new to this tribe, can anyone clue me in to what this might be?

I help people that is basically my job. I work in a residential program for the mentally ill, and also work with developmentally disabled folks as well. I make just under 12 bucks an hour. I work the night shift. Wish I had gotten it together to make more $ in lfe. I used to travel with a nomadic community called the Deadheads, around the country so I kinda get the Burningman thing, as I have also made it to a few national rainbow gatherings... I just do not make enough $ to get my butt to Burningman... I also question why Burningman is in the desert, and it why it costs so much... Is this just a continuation of Classism, is this why they are celebrating the American Dream, this year. In my lifetime the American Dream has become the American Myth the middle class is dying out.... We are in serious trouble in this country....

... I'm not sick of hearing about it. It's been my own personal choice to not go and I respect other's, almost religious, fervor for it. My reason for not going is simple: I satisfy that need for self expresion and inspiration and any other experience that may be incurred at BM, on a smaller scale, by going to a different desert gathering. Yes, I'm terribly curious, in general, and I hope to go one of these years but up until now I have not been interested enough to make the comittment and arduous preparation to go. I'm even a Nevada resident now! I moved to Las Vegas about a month and a half ago and I wouldn't have had the obligations of family or work (I'm no longer married and my kids live with their mother and I'm not working at the moment) but still I was not psyched about it.

A Tropical Rain Forest Event

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:
http://kapilina.tribe.net/thread/5438fe28-b674-4c10-9bed-3334aae6f4e3

Cheap Airfare From Mainland:

Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

Saturday: Got Gear into RV, going to stop by Cat, Jane, Bill, and Olivers to pick them up and we are off....
Sunday: On the road three hours, stopped twice to practice sex ;) I like the bunk bed over the drivers seat.
Monday: Arrived at Black Rock at 1 am ( we practiced a lot of sex beforehand and ate at the cafe in Black Rock )

Tuesday?
Wednesday?
what do you think the Diary would read?

in 115 degree heat do condoms with spermicide melt faster than those without spermicide?

I have lots and lots more questions maybe slanted ever so slightly when i went thru the site of burningman (www.burningman.com)

One that is ontop of my head right now is the filming registration, meaning if I were to bring my handy camcorder with me I would have to register it, no real biggie but what the head honcho afraid of?

I appreciate the 10 Principals, but there appears to be A LOT of media at Burning man...from the San Francisco chronicle to independant media ...definately a sign of mainstream.

I guess I can't wait for Burning Man to return to Baker Beach...

Beware of Urban Legend News Reports on BM

FYI- Double check the news sources on reports of BM like activities et. al.

There are several, SEVERAL misguided people out there with the goal of 1) to deter attendees 2) hype up BM like activities and parties 3) make a name for themselves

Key indicators of a bogus news report - 1) there is only 1 Eyewitness or news source 2) the words "paramilitary" or my personal favorite "secret agents from the Bureau of Tabacco and Firearms" ( its Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms - ATF )
3) it always happens on somebody's PRIVATE Property "just outside city limits" Fyi the Salt Lake City limits to not stretch to black rock

Please don't be alarmed or an alarmist, remain calm for another week then eventually it will end up on CNN the source of true information...then you can panic if you really need to.

It seems from the big discussion under "Going this year" that there are two groups of people in this tribe: 1) Those who've never been to BM but would like to and 2) Those who really don't want to go. Which are you?

I personally am curious. I could see myself going just to see what the hype is. But I'm not just aching to go to the desert with a bunch of total stoners, get burned, not shower for a week while being covered in body paint, and bleh bleh bleh.

What appeals to me about BM is the sense of freedom of expression and total removal from the culture of "civilization" and it's norms. Perhaps I'm also put off by the fact that after a week of this, everyone goes back home and ...

...tribe.net is becoming filled up with ads and tribe topics associated with the Burning Man art festivals. Even online news articles unrelated to the event have snuck in the subject nonetheless.

I wonder how much time will pass before you get a influx of new 'burners' that use the limited information of these articles and other biased information as thier insight on what to expect? I mean, sure these people will go ahead and realize the real deal and may not return for a second year, but it is still going to be bothersome in some ways.

I knwo in some of the fandoms Im in (sci fi type fandoms), the conventions have brimmed over with this type of element.

Let's be real for a second........Playa means beach...there is no beach of any kind within 500+ miles of BM.

It always makes me chuckle. Sort of a pearls before swine comment.

Cant they come up with a more truthfull sounding name for where everybody hangs...like..the plataeu, or the frying pan, the dust bowl, the sand blaster??????

The playa just sounds so...pretentiously bullshit like. Take enuf acid, then that vast sandlot might transform into a beach, but, watch out for the undertow when you dive in head first.

Is there a history/reason it is called the Playa???

I just went to the fire drums gathering in Santa Cruz this year and it was amazing. . . I think I really really just don't like the desert. . but I do love the beach. .

My best friends are burners as I am an avid fire dancer. . in that community it can be quite alienating not to have gone to BM. I love the concept and everything about it accept the desert! I need water!

I'll go when I get rich I guess, then I will build the only beach on La Playa!! OORRR we can start a new renegade gathering Burning Beach . . .whos comin with me man. . .. whos comin'

How I Didn't Go To Burning Man

This is an excerpt from my blog, written on September 17th, 2004 and posted at http://www.livejournal.com/users/jamezsmith

HOW I DIDN’T GO TO BURNING MAN
So, what with my roommate being a total fucking idiot, and various other factors contributing to psychological strain, I realized that I needed to get the fuck out of Dodge… so, I decided to go to Nevada. NOT to Burning Man, but to The Mountain.

I hopped on a Greyhound bus and road into Reno. When I arrived, my host was waiting for me at one of the local taverns. We socialized for several hours, and friends old and new joined our little party. I was feeling much better, and looking forward to a relaxing weekend on The Mountain.

It was not meant to be.

Someone pointed out that tonight was the night that they “burned The Man”. Someone else thought it would be a great idea to drive out to the Playa and watch The Man burn. Being a guest, and without my own transportation, I didn’t see where I had much room to argue.

So, piling into the pickup, and after making pit-stops for food, water, booze, blankets and money (just in case we have to pay! [the irony will be made apparent]), we set off down the highways of Nevada to watch The Burn.

It was a clear night. And speeding down the road in excess of 70 mph, it was quite cold in the back of that pickup. To compensate, we buried ourselves under the piles of blankets which effectively held in our body heat. Occasionally, we’d stick our heads out for fresh air, and gaze at the star-filled sky until, ears freezing, we’d re-submerge beneath the blankets. For most of the ride, we had no idea where we were.

I got rather comfy under the covers, and actually fell asleep. I awoke as I felt the vehicle slow down. “We must be there.” I thought, so I stuck my head out, but quickly went back under because of all the dust being kicked up.

The truck slowed to a crawl. Techno music threatened in the distance. The truck was approaching the entrance gate to Burning Man.

“Do you have your tickets?” the guy at the gate asked, at which point, the truck sped up with the squeal of gravel! What the fuck? Were we crashing the gate at Burning Man?

I sat up, throwing the covers from my head. Sure enough, the entry way was shrinking behind us, the gate guard talking into his radio, as we sped towards the main playa. The folks in the cab of the pickup were yelling at each other. The truck stopped with a skid. One guy… my host, actually… jumped out of the passengers side, yelling “Fuck YOU!”, and stormed of towards the festivities.

I sat there stunned. “Holy Fuck. Holy Fuck. We just crashed Burning Man. Do you have any idea how NOT cool this is?” I asked of my fellow passengers in the back seat.

All I could think about was JD and other people I know who work their asses off to make this event happen every year. I thought about how Hernan tried to get me to go, and how I always refused, saying that I didn’t like the idea of the heat, the dust, the noise and expense. I thought about how folks like Nicky begged for money to pay for their tickets. I thought about Will and his stolen tickets. This was a Big Deal to a lot of people I know and love, and we just fucking crashed the gate!

Before I could think of what to do next, the decision was taken from all of our hands. From virtually nowhere, and Nevada State Forest Ranger SUV appeared. As we focused on that, two Nevada State Highway Patrol vehicles came up behind us. In a matter of minutes we were surrounded by two Forest Ranger SUVs, two cop cars, and two or three four-wheel buggies. The cops had their guns drawn.

“My Life Sucks.”

One by one, we were asked to step out of the vehicle. The driver, initially refused to do so, until we yelled at him. We were all asked for identification. One drunk idiot, I’ll call him Mr. Ed (cuz he was a horse’s ass), refused to show his i.d.: “I don’t have to show you my i.d. You don’t have a warrant. Take me to jail. Take all of us to jail!”

Jerk, the driver, failed the breathalyzer (1.4, I think). Even still, he continued to lie about how much he’d had to drink. And I began reprimanding myself for getting into a vehicle with these drunk idiots in the first place.

“Is anyone here sober?” an officer asked. All of my fellow passengers looked at me. I sighed, and raised my hand. Whatever I didn’t sleep off on the ride there, the shock of this situation quickly burnt out of my system.

I had my first ever breathalyzer test, as they ran my license through the computer. They weren’t exactly familiar with the use of the breathalyzer. It was, quite literally, fresh out of the box. I’m not exaggerating. The box the device came in was laying on the hood of the car, with the Styrofoam and plastic bag containing the instructions. Two officers argued about how to use it as a third SUV showed up with dogs barking. “ If they let those dogs out, we are so fucked.” I thought.

One of the State Troopers said that he had one of older model breathalyzers, and everyone enthusiastically encouraged him to retrieve it, which he did.

“Breathe in, hold it. Then breathe out until I tell you to stop.”

The officers were disturbingly disappointed at my .0002 results. They put me through a couple of hand/eye coordination drills… one of which seemed ridiculous and made up on the spot. My license came back clean, and I passed their little battery of tests, so they appointed me the designated driver. They instructed Jerk to give me the keys, then handed him a $250 dollar fine. Lucky bastard should have been taken to jail.

We were escorted off of the property by one of the Forest Rangers, and I was given directions back to Reno.

how to have the burning man experience at home

All three of my adult children are burning man lunatics and are always trying to convince me to go, as are their friends. i told their friend Heather that any vacation I went on that involved sand also had to invilve water. She replied,"there's water at BM; the truck comes by every hour!" She later sent me the following:
Note:Together was a gathering produced by the Tecknocollective of which my sons were foundig members.

i promised you this at together!!!!!

How to have the Burning Man experience
from the comfort of your own home:

Pay an escort of your affectional preference subset
to not bathe for five days, cover themselves in glitter, dust,
and sunscreen, wear a skanky neon wig, and dance close naked;
-- then tell you they have a lover back home at the end of the night.

Tear down your house. Put it in a truck.
Drive 10 hours in any direction.
Put the house back together.
Invite everyone you meet to come over and party.
When everyone leaves, follow them back to
their homes, drink all their booze, and break things.

Stack all your fans in one corner of your livingroom.
Put on your most fabulous outfit.
Turn the fans on full blast.
Dump a vacuum cleaner bag in front of them.

Pitch your tent next to the wall of speakers in a crowded, noisy club.
Go to sleep.
Wake up 2 hours later in a 110+ degree tent.

Only use the toilet in a house that is at least 3 blocks away.
Drain all the water from the toilet. Only flush it every 4 days.
Hide all the toilet paper.

Visit a restaurant and pay them to let you alternate
lying in the walk-in freezer and sitting in the oven.

Don't sleep for 5 days. Take a wide variety of
hallucinogenic/emotion-altering drugs.
Pick a fight with your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Cut, burn, electrocute, bruise, and sunburn various
parts of your body. Forget how you did it.
Don't go to a doctor.

Buy a new pair of favorite shoes.
Throw one shoe away.

Buy a new set of expensive camping gear.
Break it.

Spend a whole year rummaging through thrift stores
for the perfect, most outrageous costume.
Forget to pack it.

Listen to music you hate for 168 hours straight, or
until you think you are going to scream. Scream.
Realize you'll love the music for the rest of your life.

Get so drunk you can't recognize your own house.
Walk slowly around the block for 5 hours.

Sprinkle dirty sand in all your food.

Mail $200 to the Reno casino of your choice.

Go to a museum. Find one of Salvador Dali's more
disturbing but beautiful paintings.
Climb inside it.

Spend thousands of dollars on a deeply personal art work.
Hide it in a funhouse on the edge of the city.
Blow it up.

Set up a DJ system downwind of a three alarm fire.
Play a short loop of drum'n'bass fortissimo until the embers are cold.

Have a 3 a.m. soul-baring conversation with a drag nun in platforms,
a crocodile, and Bugs Bunny.
Be unable to tell if you're hallucinating.

There was a horrible mudslide in La Conchita just recently. 10+ people died. Several of them where very well know in the BM community. Within hours, funds had been set up and fundraisers had been organized like nothing I've ever seen before.

http://www.theclandestino.com/

Thousands of dollars have been raised to help the survivors and coming right after the Tsunami as well made it even tougher as many had already given generously to those funds.

Burning Man is a party in the desert, but it's a whole lot more. There are many here who have not been, but may go. There are also many here who "just don't get it." I sincerely hope that if ever tragedy strikes your life, you have people around you like Charlie did.

WE HAVE A DREAM: TAKING BACK BURNING MAN

This just in from Jim Mason, et al....(website at bottom)

SUMMARY: We are the artists. We feel that this event which we made
great has gotten away
from us and we would like it back. We want the art to be spectacular
again and we are
willing to step forward to do the work to make it so. But for this to
happen, we think
the "art curation" should be put in the hands of rotating "Guest
Curators" and all funding
decisions should be made by "Direct Vote" of the full community. The
art should also be
well funded (10% of the gate) and not subject to creativity squashing
litmus tests for
"theme compliance" and "mandatory interactivity".

The petitioners at tinyurl.com/6l5lh request attention to these
very reasonable
demands or we commit to STOP CONTRIBUTING our art to Burning Man.
Repeated discussions
over many years have failed to result in meaningful change, so now we
are resorting to
more extreme measures. TOGETHER we can change things.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

FULL PROPOSAL

(A public service announcement from The Shipyard and fellow petitioners at
tinyurl.com/6l5lh)

What to do about Burning Man . . . ?

If we can't have our country, we better damn well make sure our local
culture is right,
proper and promoting of the good things.

Unfortunately, the exit polls for Burning Man --the 10,000 lb elephant
in the room of
local creative work-- have not been looking too good of late. This
year most of us left
saying various forms of
"Where-the-hell-was-all-the-insanely-great-amazing-art?",
"I'm-not-really-feeling-it-very-much anymore" and
"That-was-a-great-party-but . . . ".
(Consult your local email list for the full laundry list of complaints)

It is silly to tolerate the current level of ambivalence and
dissatisfaction, yet continue
to pour so much of ourselves and our art into this event. It seems we
would all be better
served if we decided en masse that it is over and done with, and
direct our efforts
elsewhere. Or we decided en masse that it is still an irreplaceable
combination of people
and ideas and we need to fix it- that we make it strongly felt, deeply
creative and
unfairly fun, once again.

We propose that it is high time we ALL make a decision about this
together. That is, we
ALL decide to either be done with it and shut up about it already. Or
we ALL decide to do
it again with ambition, care, and comedy- for the benefit of ALL No
more middle ground or
mediocrity. LET'S DECIDE: ONCE-AND-FOR-ALL. Enough whining about the
whole thing.

While the former "it's done" choice is growing in popularity, we think
the later option is
the better choice in service of Art and Chaos. That is, we agree en
masse that there is
no other gig like this anywhere, that it is the creation of ALL of us,
and we can ALL
agree together to fix it and make it stunning wonderful again, Borg be
damned. We
acknowledge that this only works and is only fun if most ALL of us
agree do it together,
en masse, not as a few stragglers here and there.

The fix must address many issues, but the CORE ISSUE for the fix is
THE ART. Art, Art,
Art: that is what this is all about. Fix the art and make the process
for doing it fair
and fun again, and the rest will likely fall into place. Our solution
towards this end is
simple: RADICALLY DEMOCRATIZE THE CURATION AND FUNDING OF THE ART.

So Borg, how about a deal? We, the mass of Burning Man creative
agents, agree to reapply
ourselves with focus to the creation of mind-blowing,
I-can't-believe-someone-actually-made-that, KNOCK YOU ON YOUR ASS ART,
and you agree to
LET US DO IT. Simple. You GET OUT OF THE WAY. No more benevolent
ART-ocracy of black
box funding, crushing bureaucracy and resistance to creativity in the
name of "theme
compliance" or "mandatory interactivity". Release the power back to
the participants.

Here's how we propose to do it. Here are our demands. You might
consider them a sort of
latter day Lutherian Manifesto, a list of Theses nailed to your door-
the door guarding
the overwrought, incestuous, indulgence dispensing, overly ritualized
and bureaucratically
mired Catholic Church we call Burning Man

In the end, our demands are simple: GIVE US OUR EVENT BACK OR WE
LEAVE. Those who agree
with these sentiments are registering their support at tinyurl.com/6l5lh.

We want to be able to give of ourselves fully again. And this is what
is it going to
take.

WE CURATE THE ART.
The Art Monarchy of Larry and Ladybee is getting boring for them as
well as for us. So
let's return the art curation, as much as it is needed, to the
participants. We propose
to do this through a combination of "Guest Curators" and "Direct
Voting" in art funding
decisions. Here's how it would work.

A. "Direct Voting":
In March each year, we rent out SOMARTS and have an art selection
party. Kind of like the
old Spring event. Invite everyone out and put all the proposals up on
the wall. Everyone
who wants funding has to come and promote their wares. Those too far
away can have reps,
videos or some other stand ins. Those who should be in the running but
can't write a
proposal or make a drawing to save their lives will get a little help
so their brilliance
is not missed. Pin the results on the walls all around SOMARTS. Walk
around and meet the
people. Consider the possibilities. Then put all of it on the Burning
Man website.

A week later we all VOTE. That is, everyone who is in the Burning Man
database by virtue
of a past ticket purchase or art project gets to vote. Each person can
vote for their top
ten projects, ranking them in order of preference. Instant runoff
balloting- just like
San Francisco. A simple webform can make all this happen quickly, easily and
transparently. No more nepotism and bitching at the Borg for who they
choose or don't
choose. No more complaints about the great projects that got tossed
for X or Y reason.
Make the whole thing OUR responsibility. Make us ALL feel a stake in
it again. It will
be fun and make us all believers again. And it only seems fair that
those who are being
"taxed" to support the art get to actually vote where their money is going.

B. "Guest Curators:"
Each year we also elect a group of likely suspects to be "Guest
Curators". The Guest
Curators would prepare and organize the above SOMARTS event, decide
the theme, cultivate
art projects and people, and generally scheme new stuff. They gather
the creative forces
each year and frame the event with new ideas, narratives and general
urban planning. They
make sure the event stays fresh and we are surprised by new things,
year after year. They
do the event framing work that has to date only been done by Larry.
Larry seems tired of
doing it, so let's rotate who gets to sit in the high chair and paint
the big picture for
Burning Man each year. New things will surely happen. The Guest
Curators would also form
an independent "art council" with Larry, Ladybee and several other
artists to work out the
details of funding decisions and general art logistics.

We elect the Guest Curators in a similar manner to the Direct Voting
for the art funding.
In November of each year, the groups that want to be the Guest
Curators for the coming
year put together proposals with their vision and plans for the event,
theme ideas, and
potential new site layouts. These proposals are posted to the JRS as
well as the Burning
Man website. And then we all VOTE. ALL of us. Again, everyone in the Burning Man
database gets to vote, one vote per person.

Who are the likely suspects for Guest Curators? Many come to mind. They might be
regional Burning Man groups or various local arts organizations;
established theme camps
or general problems-about-town. This might become the vehicle for
bringing successful
regional groups back to the center event to show their stuff. Imagine
the difference in
the event from year to year if some of the below groups each had their
turn at the wheel:

- Madagascar Institute (NYC)
- Austin regional
- London regional
- Robodock (netherlands)
- Flaming Lotus Girls
- Spock Mountain Research Laboratories
- The Shipyard
- Odeon Bar
- Illumination Village
- Camp Carp
- The Cataclysmic Megashear Ranch
- Death Guild
- The Crucible
- David Best Temple Crew
- The DPW
- Houston Art Car Gang
- Cyclecide Bike Rodeo
- etc etc.etc.

2. TEN PERCENT FOR ART.
Yes, it is the art, stupid. The party is nice, but what makes this
event work is wildly
ambitious, quietly clever, loudly obnoxious or just generally unlikely
creative work of
all forms. We have tolerated the liabilities of population growth for
years. Now the art
should reap some reward in the form of increased financial support so
more and better is
possible. Less than 4% of current total ticket income goes to directly
fund art. It
seems a small gesture that 10% of ticket revenues are dedicated to the
direct and
exclusive support of artists to make art.

3. NO THEMEATIC FUNDAMENTALISM.
Ok, we'll agree to tolerate the themes each year. But there is no need
to make them
regimes of absolutism.

Can we finally admit in broad daylight that most of the art has little
or no relationship
to the theme? We just do what we want and dress it in appropriate
words so the Borg will
consider funding it or place us where we want to be. Have a great idea
to make something
spectacular and a hundred people lined up to do it, but it is not
"thematic"? Sorry, no
funding. No DPW help. No general support. No good real estate. You are
banished to the
"non-theme art" bin. Have a stupid idea that reads as an obvious stage
prop for the
theme? Well step right up- the Borg would love to write you a big
check to pollute the
playa with more poorly considered theme decoration projects.

In short, theme compliance is not a good predictor of good art or
successful community.
So let's toss the "theme compliance" litmus test. It is not serving us well.

4. BURNING MAN ART IS "RADICALLY COLLABORATIVE"
The "interactivity requirement" for funded Burning Man art has run its
course to an
unimpressive end. Good Burning Man art is nearly always radically
collaborative and tilted
towards the apparently impossible- interactivity may or may not be a
side effect. The
"community forming" function of Burning Man art is in the broad
gathering of people to
make it, not in some form of simple interactivity via the pushing
buttons, spinning of
things, writing of graffiti, or being able to climb on the finished
product. Many of the
historic best and most remembered projects did not have any form of
"interactivity" in
their finished manifestation. Likewise many successful communities
emerged from projects
with absolutely no interactivity. So let's allow people to make what they want,
irrespective of interactivity, but encourage projects founded on
radical collaboration.

Chaos will provide . . .

Sound reasonable? Sound possible? Sound right, honest and true? We
think so. Rarely do
humans get to play with the glorious joys of a conflagration as
unlikely as this one. We
ALL created and nourished it together. We don't want to lose it. We
can't lose it. We
can't not care.

So let's be responsible for our creation. Let's not give up on it.
Let's come together
again. Let's fix it. Let's make it amazing great.

Let's once again scare our very selves with the extreme dimension of
our desire and
creativity.

There is so much beauty. Let's demand to have it again and again.

And if we can't have it here again, we are ALL going to go have it
somewhere else.

The Shipyard thanks you for reading.

PS- If you agree with the above, we invite you to join us and sign our
petition at
www.odeonbar.com/petition/1/petition.php

Together
we can change this.

BURNING MAN..

Like anybody cares.

People get back and feel like they've walked to the dark side of the moon and KNOW something about life now.

What they know now, is that running water is good, and being dusty sucks.

Okay, I'm just being harsh, and I will probably go to Burning Man to have my own revelatory cathartic quest...

But now, I'll just stay in the Dave Chapelle Anti-Burning man club..

H8 H8 H8.

how burning man effects my life, even though I've never been and am not going this year

so my ex, wife, is going to bm for the 2nd time, and once again taking my(our?) camping eqipment, as well as my sleeping bag (all of this is friendly) to said bm event, and I get to watch our (my) dog, who she usually has, in sf, and cannot stay at my girlfriends for the duration. and my gf may or may not come to sf. I am not a victim. I could have said no. it's just interesting how this event can influence me, through my ex wife of all people.

then last year she met this jerk, flew to hawaii, and called me asking me why she does these things. it's all fascinating. i do love my dog, really, he is a cutie.

and then there's the dust...

I have never gone to burning man and I never intend to sit in the hot sun in the desert for two weeks.

I would much rather got to a tropical paradise like Sugar Beach in Maui. I just posted a picture from the Kihei Kai resort. The wide sandy beach is a wonderful place to just walk out into the ocean and swim.

I am remembering the feeling, the overwhelming emotion I felt when
Wolfie came back from the Temple after having the memorial for his dad.
He was sharing memories of his dad, the connectedness and love they had
from their experiences at Burning Man, and I cried. To hear that he
spread his father's ashes at the Temple moved me. It was either water
dripping from the melting bag of ice on my head or real full-fledged
tears...I think they were tears =)

There were innumerable moments of love, kindness, generosity, courage,
compassion, laughter, sweetness, mischievousness, naughtiness. And that
wasn’t just when I was high! ;) It was there ALL the time.

It was there when I rolled out of my tiny little tent right onto the
dirt to turn my head to catch a prolonged glimpse of a beautiful shiny
sun streaked boy bathing proudly naked in the shower next to me. It was
there the all too few times I slithered around camp on an interim Moop
patrol (I promise to participate much more vigorously next year!!!) It
was there when Josh and Amy would turn up with a ear to ear smile
offering to everyone the yummiest sausages, steaks, salads, bacon and
eggs. So gourmet! It was there in the gentle jingle of the bells Stream
kindly lent me. I carried and played them everywhere I went from the
moment he handed them to me (even if I don’t know where my clothes are
at this moment (I think I might find them downtown later tonight)…I
have the pretty jingle bells right next to me now. =) It was there in
the simultaneous thrill and trepidation I felt knowing Eric would be
showing up on Friday doing whatever he needed to do to make it to BRC
from out of a Miami hurricane. And, it was there every time Paynie said
he’d take care of something it got taken care of by him and all our
totally awesome BBC camp mates, whether it was shelter from dust, good
food, shade, water, ice =), foot care, music, beverages, great
conversation, getting to know each other and sharing! It was ALL there.
Not just in our camp, everywhere I went, most everyone I spoke to. All
there. Merci!

Many times, I thought my heart would leap out of my body and run across
the Playa, spinning in every direction, so as not to miss even the
tiniest artistic masterpiece of a perfectly placed sparkle on the tip
of a perfectly placed eyelash on a perfectly and artistically and
magically made up eye!

I have memories of wonderful, long, hot, wandering bike rides all around
BRC…I even said some funny things here and there (Alright, alright, I
had a little help from our good friend Eeeeeee, but I thought I was
pretty damn funny =) Back home I am not known to be “funny”. Paynie may
recall, “It’s a cube on a string!...Really, it IS!!!” And I won’t forget
running into the street one late night outside the BBC party dome in my
desperate yell for help, “Oh my GOD! The DJ’s are leaving. The DJ’s ARE
LEAVING!!! Help me!!!”

And the music!!! Great. Great! Great! The DJ’s, thank you all for your
bass love. I loved every beat (well almost, there are a few comp CD’s
that we may leave OFF repeat back in LA) and my hips loved it all too.
I can’t wait to dance with all of you again!!!

Oh my god and the Art! The light! The wonders of heaven touched down on
us all and BRC again (for me the first time)!!! Wow, so much to
remember, so much experienced! Almost no words to describe. Surreal,
magical, other-worldly and yet so relatable.

I do want to say thank you and give a big hug to everyone who made BBC,
BRC and BM an amazing trip for me. All the time, effort and love to
acquire the camp, the shelter supplies (many of you shared tools and
rebar, caps, ties, and such with me), the music, the beverages, the
shower, the Bouncy Castle, the Boat, the pancakes, your costumes, the
air sucker =), your smiles and hugs during even the longest dust
storms, everything it took to make a comfortable, enjoyable and totally
memorable Burning Man experience for a first timer and a late comer.
Thank YOU! And thank you Paynie for being our Den Mother!!!

To say that you just don't "get it" until you participate and experience
Burning Man is a massive MASSIVE understatement. I DIDN’T GET IT! I
didn’t get it before I got there. Now I think I got something.
Something big, something gorgeous, something totally ALIVE! And I love
it. And I want it back! I WANT IT BACK!!!

Paynie told me it would change my life. Thanks, my angel!

Perhaps there will be more writing about this in the near future…I know
I remember more!

I look forward to partying with you all in LA or where ever else in the
world (the universe) we take life!!!!!!!!!
going to BM this year

Well I'm definetely in for this year. I recently went to Xara Dulzura, a local (So Cal) regional BM-type event. It was an interesting experience.

There were some things about the event that were really corny - everyone called each other by their "playa" names and the like. And almost every discussion was about BM. It was like I fell into a cult. An amusing and interesting cult.

My BM pet peeve though - people who refer to BM or the playa as "home".

So any other never beens going this year?

Putting my camping gear in storage.

I've been planning this trip for about six months - going with my BF who has gone for the last eight years. Just found out I can't go and because I am going to need his help he can't go either. This sucks. Not going is bad enough - being the reason that he misses is worse.

are we still on for the BM house party?

non-burners and their families. Be respectful of your Burner family,
too, come to think of it!

* Its about a 5 minute walk through a forest from that area to the
Burning Man site.

* The two areas are completely separate, but you will be able to come
and go as you please between the two of them. For more info on this

i have a bit of a camping issue - could be a bummer

My first burn will be this summer and I am looking forward to it. Definitely going for sure, i decided. there is one small snag though about my camping arrangements. I thought it would be nice to camp with folks I know from Denver, though I no longer live in Denver and probably will not be going back. Have you ever lived in a place where your luck just ran black most of the time?

So, I am looking to start my life over again and in a new place and I find out that the last guy I dated, not six months ago, is camping in the mellow camp that is good for newbies and with the other folks I like and trust.

It was a bad break in relations and i did end up making amends in the end for anything I felt I did wrong via email and it was met with a terse but polite reply. Then recenently, this person emailed me and we were cool about acknowledging that both of us will be there, and for a bit it seemed pretty benign. but then I started to think about it and what others had said about BM being very intense and a reflection of many things.

Basically, I've started to second guess things, wondering if I should just bail on this particular camp, but then I will not have a camp to camp at where I know and get along with a few folks. Even this guy told me via email, when I told him I could camp elsewhere if he had an issue with it, "camp with people you know, it goes better."

What if I get there and I find myself either beset by negative feelings or turned on by the said person's presence again or if things feel weird the whole time, etc. etc. I really liked this person but he was not honest and he did hurt my feelings quite a bit in the end. Our association ended six months ago.

That seems like more than enough time to be prepared for wierdness or surprises of any kind by the time BM rolls around, but I will admit, I am sensitive to subtle energies, I dont' like bullshit and games, and having to be around someone who was a real dog to me might really bother me and therefore bum out my whole trip there on some level

I know it is mind over matter and therefor I should be able to handle it, keeping in mind everyone will be off doing thier own thing and I will probably not see him, but I just might not want to see him at all. Why go out to this new experience and face old dark energy that was really no good for me at all?

I do have a couple of other folks who I do not know who invited me to camp either at thier camp or near where they are camping.

What would you do? Would you face an unpleasant character from your past in a camp of freinds or camp with those you do not know?

Thanks for the advice,
Cat
ok, so. i was at this birthday party...

and these people start talking about "the playa." not like, 'that girl is a playa, she had sex with everyone in this room,' but like pronounced with a lame anglo-cized spanish accent.

i wasn't paying any attention to them at first, i was just relaxing on the couch, when i looked up and realized that my head was touching a framed in glass photo of 'the man' the people 'burn.'

then i realized what they were talking about.

i realized the weird cultish way they were talking about 'the playa,' and it was really annoying. at one point, one of them made another of them get out some overalls from his closet so they could all SMELL the overalls. why? to "smell the playa," they could "still smell the playa dirt on them."

ew. EW!

i mean, what are these people thinking? this is so damn LAME!

p.s. i have nothing against dirt. i am often dirty and smelly, and i like 'bad' smells just fine for the most part. 'ew' was in reference to how these people were living, with this weird nostalgia/deferral that put so much of their lives' emphasis on this one short time in the summer, with the rest of their lives revolving around this.

p.p.s. the guy whose dirty clothes they smelled, when i first arrived at the party, yelled at me "got any drugs?" to which i said, "no," to which he said, "then get the fuck outta here! har har har!" what can i say, i had to go, it was my friend's birthday party.

Hey people. This is the funniest tribe ever. You do realise that you joined this tribe because you are "sick of hearing about Burning Man." Do you see how twisted that is. Step back from your computer for a moment and breath.

If I was sick of cheese sandwiches, the very last thing I would do would be to join a tribe called "Sick of Cheese Sandwiches" and chat constantly about how sick I was about cheese sandwiches.

Sydney, Floramone, LuLu, §had, Jameskitty. I wonder which of you noggins will bat first.

Anyone care to join my tribe commentsaboutmoviesihaven'tseen.tribe.net ?

Rock on. This is funny as hell.

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 9 Apr 2004

Fiery foreplay draws sentence

(April 9, 2004) — A Wayne County woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for setting a friend on fire in a consensual foreplay act.

Darlene Humby, 27, of Newark was sentenced when she pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in connection with the Dec. 12 incident at her home, said Wayne County District Attorney Richard Healy. If convicted after a trial, Humby could have faced up to seven years in prison.

Healy said Humby set the victim’s shirt on fire; lighter fluid may have been involved, but there was not much left of the two shirts the victim was wearing to confirm that.

“She didn’t try to injure him,” Healy said. “It was reckless assault. They were friends and it ignited. He was burned quite severely on his face, arms, neck and torso.”

The 32-year-old victim, who was not identified, suffered second- and third-degree burns. He spent two weeks in Strong Memorial Hospital’s burn unit and required two skin grafts, Healy said.

help me pull a birthday prank

Today is the birthday of coworker and friend, Matt Conlon. He is sometimes better known in the community as Jackass.

A regular birthday greeting might be boring, so I decided instead to come up with a very weird ad that I was thinking of placing for myself just to see what kind of response I would get.

Here's the ad:

==========
http://seattle.craigslist.org/ers/24352699.html

I need someone to come over to my house and kill the spider in my bathtub.

That's it. No, really. I need you to kill the spider. He's been there for days and I think he's getting bigger. I can't shower with him in the tub. I can't even use the toilet because he growls at me.

In return I will thank you, I will buy you a beer, I will even take you out for chicken gizzards. But first I need you to kill the spider.

This thing is huge, so you better bring a baseball bat.

Oh, and wish me a happy birthday.

it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
this is in or around Seattle
==========

I was hoping that a few of you good people would be kind enough to respond to the ad in some ridiculous fashion. Extra points for weird. Berate him for being a sissy, whatever you choose. By the way, there is no spider.

These messages will be dropping into his inbox and he does not know what is going on.

I would greatly appreciate it.

So I admit I have been avoiding it for years- my current social circle started going the last few years and have been very vocal about it and I actually had to make a rule that one of my friends couldn't talk about it to me anymore- but before that I knew loads of folks who went for years but weren't pressuring about it- I think the more recent BM folks are more pushy about it

And this is why I want to go:

"Due to a spate of increased pantlessness, the Pantzooka Patrol is waging a war against males wearing shirts and nothing south."

The brillance of pantzooka - and the idea of using humor to change behavior - appeals to me on so many levels. Plus middle aged men with no pants on are sort of creepy.

Confessions of an ex-burner

Okay I admit it, I've been to Burning Man. Twice. 2001 & 2002. I won't be going back because...

2001 was fun. We did a theme camp which was all about having a massive BBQ every evening at dusk and chowing down with whoever happened to drop by. It was fun. Saw some good art, saw lots of bad art, saw lots of naked people, marveled at the ability of my campmates to handle their drugs. Heard lots and lots of bad techno music. The burning of the man was cool. Bigassed fires are always lots of fun. I was there for 8 days and couldn't wait to return the next year.

2002: went with the same people. Realized that putting together another theme camp was a fuck of a lot of work and money. Went. Discovered on day 2 or 3 that I was bored shitless. There wasn't enough fire or anarchy or danger to interest me. And then there was the dumbfuck clown -- yes there are hipster clowns there, the stupidest people on the face of the earth -- who berated someone in our group for not wearing a costume. Some kind of recursive conformity thing going there. Whatever. An isolated incident regarding one idiot but indicative of the hivemind mentality. I was there for 9 days and couldn't wait to get home. (I had to stick around cause I drove the big truck that carried all of our shit.)

I thought a lot about why I'd grown to dislike the event. First off, it's regulated to the point that there's none of the danger that evidently made the early days a lot of fun. I've heard the tales of high-speed driving on the playa and gunfire and blowing shit up and it sounded like big fun. If people got hurt or killed, so be it. It sounds like the kind of event where you knew that was a possibility going in.

As it is now, you have to be an idiot or extremely unlucky to get yourself hurt or in trouble there. People talk about how harsh the environment is, well sure, but you've got a huge support structure, you can buy ice for fuck's sake, and you've got your shade structure and your zillion gallons of water and it's just a very hot walk in the park.

Then there's the whole cult aspect. I defy burners to explain to me why yammering about the beauty of the BM experience is any different from a fundie christer yammering on about being born again.

There's the enforced wackiness. People dress up in stupid shit they'd never wear anywhere else. Sure fine costumes are fun, but what's the big deal? It's like Ren Faire for hipsters.

The ticket cost sucks, but to be fair, you can get in for cheap or free by working the cafe or something.

Mostly, though, it's just become a capital-E Event for a lot of people, just like the Daytona 500. It's just assumed by the people who're into the Event that of course you're interested and you're going and you'll enjoy it just like they do. I instinctively run away from such events and am not a joiner or a fucking people person. I can stay home and walk around naked in my condo and have all the sex I want with my girlfriend and listen to the music I want and not have to breathe dust and patchouli.

I may actually go to Burning Bush this year to see if it's dangerous and weird and chaotic enough to keep me amused. Maybe it'll be a fun ride before it becomes a hipster Disneyland in the desert. If I get killed there, you may point at this post and snicker.

I could handle this BM thingy if it was at a huge hotel. with a pool!camping is so not my thing. I also live in western NY where it is cold. I hate being hot.I dont want to see naked hippies.dont get me wrong,I am called a hippy occasionally ,so that does not mean I want to be around naked versions of myself. so being hot gritty AND camping around naked hippies makes me queasy. the concept is a cool idea ,if you are into it. to each their own. I ,alack, am never going to experience BM.
there is a mini version all my homey hippies go to 'round here called Starwood.
http://www.rosencomet.com/starwood/
that is all I hear about. it is totally camping and like a cross between BM and woodstock+mud.every summer they try to convince me. they waste their breath. the blackout of '03 was the closest thing to camping I ever want to experience again! I like my bathroom and my lightswitches!
when I am cold I put on layers . when it is hot you can only get so naked then yer fucked! bleck! being hot makes me barf!
